What are eyeglasses?

Eyeglasses are the most common type of eyewear. They’re used to correct or improve vision problems that make it difficult to read, drive, or use a computer. 

Eyeglasses feature metal or plastic frames and two custom-crafted lenses. The lenses use a prescription to improve your vision, which allows you to see clearly. 

How do I know if I need eyeglasses?

Your vision changes as you get older. Not every vision change requires correction, but most do. Telltale signs that you might benefit from glasses include:

• Blurred vision
• Double vision
• Headaches
• Squinting
• Eyestrain 
• Distorted vision

You might also benefit from wearing eyeglasses if you experience auras or halos around bright lights, or you have trouble driving at night.

What conditions can eyeglasses help treat?

Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness, or myopia, means you have trouble seeing objects that are far away. Nearsightedness occurs if you have an elongated eyeball or a curved cornea. It affects about 30% of the population. 

Farsightedness

Farsightedness, or hyperopia, occurs when you have trouble seeing objects up close. This can make it difficult to read a book, magazine, or computer screen. Farsightedness occurs if you have a short eyeball or an unusually shaped cornea. It affects 5-10% of the population.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism distorts the way that light bounces off your retina, causing images to appear blurry or stretched out. Mild astigmatism rarely causes symptoms. Moderate or severe astigmatism often requires eyeglasses.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a type of farsightedness that occurs due to changes in the shape of your eye’s lens. It’s a natural part of the aging process and especially common after the age of 38. 

Are eyeglasses right for me?

To determine if eyeglasses are right for you, the team at Lake Orion Vision conducts a comprehensive vision exam, reviews your medical history, and asks about your symptoms and lifestyle. 

If they suspect the change in your vision is due to underlying health problems like diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma, they might also order an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan.

What happens if I need eyeglasses?

If your Lake Orion Vision provider determines that you can benefit from eyeglasses, the team writes you a prescription. Afterward, you can try on frames in-office.
